10 Dos and Don’ts of Sleeping

Hey, everyone!

I’ve heard that many of you have been asking about how to get a better, more restful night of sleep. Stress not! Here’s a list of tips that could help improve the quality of your sleep. Before I begin, I think it is important for me to provide a couple of disclaimers. First, I’m not a doctor. I’m just a college student who’s done some research and has experienced the occasional restless night. I strongly recommend setting up a consultation with a doctor if you have a severe case of insomnia or other mental illness that can affect getting a good night’s rest. Second, keep in mind that each person is different. Finding the best way to maintain good sleep hygiene will probably require trying out several strategies before getting some satisfaction, so get creative and be patient!

Now, onto the list!

1. Do be consistent in your sleep schedule.

The amount of sleep needed in a night depends on the individual. Regardless, you need keep up with your schedule to ensure you get enough sleep. Make adjustments to your schedule as needed and try to stay away from the snooze button. Sleeping around the same time every day can ensure that you get more from your sleep, because your brain is trained to sleep efficiently for those hours.

2. Don’t sleep in over 2 hours.

Sleeping in can be great, especially on the weekends and during vacations. However, sleeping in two plus hours can make it difficult to maintain your circadian rhythm.

3. Do avoid electronics an hour before bed.

Many people suggest removing all electronics from the bedroom because the kind of light emitted is not conducive to relaxation. If you want to know if this is true or not, try putting your electronics away an hour before you sleep and see if it makes you sleep faster.

4. Don’t sleep where there’s bright overhead lights or light from electronic devices.

However, if you need an electronic device in order to access calming noises to fall asleep, then try to use a device that is capable of playing these sounds in sleep mode. For example, I like to use my Kindle.
