10 Psychological Facts About Human Feelings

9. Mirror neurons are the brain’s hardware for harmonizing individuals to their environment (Matousek, 2011).

Mirror neurons allow us to grasp the minds of others not through conceptual reasoning but through direct stimulation. It is because of mirror neurons that you blush when you see someone else humiliated, flinch when someone else is struck, and can’t resist the urge to laugh when seeing a group struck with giggles (Rizzolatti, circa 1990). It has been said that these neurons give us the capability for empathy, allowing us to feel what other people feel – theoretically both physically and emotionally (Ramachandran, 2012).

  1. I honestly thought that I was the only one who felt the emotions of the people around you. In a way feeling others emotions helps me sympathize with them more than I normally would. I learned a lot of interesting things about emotions by reading this article. It helped me realize that I am not as different as I thought I was.

  2. Nomobophobia? How am I not surprised that this is a thing.
I honestly feel quite the opposite if I lose my phone or am not sure where it is! It’s liberating.
I do everything in my power to use mine as little as possible, heck I might even get rid of it for good! Nomobofomelia!

  3. Very enjoyable read. I wasn’t too surprised by Nomobophobia as it seems humans in a way have transformed an emotional attachment to their cell phones. It’s something that provides us with comfort in a way, due to it being our connection to other people. In general, when we feel that we have lost something important to us, we panic. Such as a lost little kid looking for their parent in a store; we have a natural sense of dependence towards the person taking care of us while we are young. Just like how most of us depend on technology so much, realizing our cell phone is missing would make us feel that we are losing our ability to reach out to people.
Desensitization was also a very great topic to bring up. It is something that I feel has been very controversy throughout society as well; such as video games. It is something that certainly gets targeted at very easy for their violence but sometimes it can be somewhat understandable as to why some may think that way sometimes. Such as Albert Bandura’s, The Bobo Doll experiment, the child was most likely to imitate the adult’s aggressive behavior towards the Bobo Doll. However, it doesn’t always necessarily mean everyone subjected to violence, will become violent in the future.

  4. Ah, yes. Broken heart syndrome. In my career as a nurse (especially as a hospice nurse) I have witnessed countless examples of this very syndrome–a loved one dies or has a very-near-death experience, and suddenly a family member or spouse lands themselves in the hospital as well. This phenomenon is evidence that stress indeed does play a major role in one’s state of health. As this article states, broken heart syndrome can be temporary; however, the long-lasting effects are life-altering.

  5. N° 5 was really interesting, though not so surprising ! But that’s all the trouble you have with Psychology : every hypothesis seems legit, until you prove by science which one is true !

    1. Great point!
One of the best lessons I’ve learned in my academic career is to never say “proved” nothing is proved unless it becomes a law, but even so, science is always looking to see if we checked every nook and cranny, and what new evidence is available as technology evolves. Science will never stop improving.
Psychology is difficult to definitely say anything is exact because of the nature of humanity, but we can get close by observing the statistics and research behind it.

      1. I completely agree with you !
No science can ever pretend to be “done”, medicine is also a great example ! 🙂

  6. Hello, I was interested in this topic, however, I feel the pagination aspect of this article completely disinterested me, and I’ve read other articles online that express I’m not alone in feeling this way about articles that do this.
Based off the reply content for this post, I hypothesize the others didn’t get all the way through all 10 clicks either.
I feel this could make the site look less professional and more about click bait. Now some people like this due to attention reasons, a option that I believe should be looked into is designing the page to have the option to view all 10 posts on one page. Giving people choices promotes accessibility towards different learners and can create a more engaging online experience.

  7. I have always fancied myself a lover of facts. Like, I like knowing a bunch of unique, sometimes, bizarre pieces of information. So I love this. I love it when I find articles like these that give me all that I like. I also really appreciate the fact that you can see the references after each of the facts so people can make sure they’re not being tricked or lied, and that this has real, integral backup. What I a little bothered by is the format of the article. The square images with the facts work a little bit better when you need to catch attention, however when someone deliberately clicks on an article like this one it means they want to read the whole thing, it means they are actively interested. It is a personal opinion of course, but as a reader I would be a lot more comfortable. But again, great piece!
