5 Essential Online Dating Rules to Follow in 2018

Online dating changes and evolves all the time. While previously considered an opportunity for younger people it has now started to appeal to crowds across all age groups. While the number of dating apps and sites has grown, the web dating rules have also evolved and become more complex.

If you’re considering this option for meeting new people and eventually finding the love of your life, you will need to follow these essential rules as determined by dating experts.

#1. Be Honest

Online dating results in a sense of anonymity. As a result, many people tend to exaggerate in their presentation in a way they’d never think of in real life.

One of the most important dating rules for singles is to keep it honest, regardless of the communication medium.

While you may feel tempted to exaggerate your accomplishments and make yourself appear to be more “interesting” than you actually are, the truth will come out sooner or later. Misleading somebody will potentially ruin the relationship before it has even begun.

#2. Look for the Warning Signs

When engaging in online dating, we’re mostly looking for people that come close to our ideal partner.  Essential dating guidelines also apply to the profiles you’re exploring. Be careful and have realistic expectations. If something appears too good to be true, it probably is.

Online dating will often turn into a popularity contest. Don’t believe grandiose claims about experiences and personal traits, unless these can be verified. A cautious approach will save you from a lot of heartache in the future.

#3. The Profile Picture Was Important before and It’s Even More so Today

Modern dating etiquette states that your picture should be representative of who you are. Remember the honesty policy? It applies to your visual representation, as well.

If you’re not 15, a mirror selfie is a big no-no, for example. Such a posed picture looks way too staged and even a bit infantile. Unless that’s the image you want to present to the world, you may want to consider something a bit more representative.

A picture of you doing a favorite activity reveals a lot of essential information. The same applies to a picture featuring your pet. Choose something that shows potential matches what you may have in common. It’s a much more interesting approach than a staged profile picture.

#4. Stick to Some Level of Privacy in the Very Beginning

On occasions, you may feel tempted to reveal too much too fast. There are privacy rules, however, you should follow at least in the beginning.

Rules for women and men alike put tons of emphasis on protecting personal information. Remember that you are communicating with strangers. Some people could be dangerous, others may be looking for ways to scam you. Be skeptical in the very beginning and don’t reveal info about where you live, where you work, where you hang out or what your income level is.

If you are concerned about your privacy, you can have an alias. Eventually, you will reveal additional details to someone you plan to meet in real life. Until the relationship gets to that phase, however, stick to safe topics that don’t reveal too much about your everyday life (and much more about your personality).

#5. Know When It’s Time to Bail

Sometimes, things will not work out, regardless of your best efforts. The rules of dating state you should know when to call it quits instead of wasting each other’s time.

Maybe the chemistry isn’t there. Maybe you don’t have that much in common. If your instinct tells you that you’re not going to enjoy an interaction in real life, you should probably discontinue the communication with the respective person.

You can still send a note about your decision – politeness is never out of fashion. Most people appreciate honesty that’s presented in a subtle way. Who knows, maybe you can maintain a friendship even if the chemistry isn’t there. Good luck!
