Although it sounds like every person would have this same goal, there are a lot of factors that might cause people to stray away from this. Bad experiences and bad economic circumstances are some of the factors that stand out.
After all, it is not really that unusual to see people taking the less ethical decision, not because they truly believe it’s right, but rather because of other implications. And it would be safe to say that the vast majority of people have done this. This makes it extremely difficult to gauge how good of a person you are since ethical and moral topics are very rarely straightforward. However, good people generally show similar behaviours or personality traits. So, this article will be discussing 6 signs that you are a better person than you think.
You are ready to learn from challenges
What is the mindset that you adopt when facing challenges and difficulties? According to psychology professor at Standford University and author of “Mindset: The New Psychology of Success”, Carol Dweck, people’s mindset can be categorised into 2, which are the fixed mindset and the growth mindset (Miller, 2019). The growth mindset is one that will allow you to embrace challenges and overcome obstacles, no matter how hard they are. If you are someone with the growth mindset, you’ll be able to continuously improve and learn from difficult situations because you are confident that you’ll be able to develop your talents to face any challenge. Of course, possessing this type of mindset will make you a better person than you think because of your willingness to adapt and improve yourself day after day.
You make time for yourself and others
Do you have a good balance between the time that you spend on yourself and the time that you spend on others? Willingly making time for yourself and others is one of the signs that you are a better person than you think. Considering other people’s needs, wants and opinions is one the traits that make you a good person. Additionally, studies have shown that helping others can have a positive effect on your own psychological and physical health (Mahtoliya, 2021).
For example, the feelings of accomplishment or satisfaction that you get for helping someone are some of the effects that helping others can have. You also know that you should not just go and give all your time to others while ignoring your own needs and wants. You’re aware that making time to work on yourself is just as important because it will allow you to be at your best, which will directly benefit how you treat and consider other people.
You confront your biases and take responsibility of your own mistakes
Do you think that you are right all the time, and blame others when things go wrong? Believe it or not, a lot of people do this very often. However, if you recognise that you are biased towards an opinion and you take responsibility for your own mistakes, you are probably a better person than you think. A lot of people might have the misconception that being a good person comes down to not making mistakes, but in reality, it all comes down to taking responsibility (Brainy Dose, 2021). Additionally, according to Dolly Chugh, psychologist, associate professor of management and organizations at New York University’s Stern School of Business, being a good person in terms of bias means confronting our mistakes rather than being trying to be “perfect” (Miller, 2019). So, if you are someone who is not afraid of making mistakes and takes responsibility of them, then you are a better person than you think.
You are compassionate and act with good intentions
Are you someone who always has the best intentions when helping others? Being compassionate and acting with good intentions are sure signs that you are a better person than you think. According to psychologist and author Rick Hanson, one of the main ways to identify if you are a good person is by analysing your own actions, thoughts, and words (Miller, 2019). Basically, if you constantly find yourself leaning towards goodness, then you are most likely a better person than you think. Some examples that might help you identify this are: rather than focusing on negative things, you support people with positivity, or you are more flexible and forgiving with someone who did something wrong but is going through hard times.
You are able to create and sustain healthy relationships
Is it easy for you to make friends and maintain these relationships healthy? Having this ability is one of the signs that you are a better person than you think. This is best explained by the fact that people will want to stick around you long-term because of the respect, love, and support that you give them (Mahtoliya, 2021). These qualities make it so that you are able to create good, and healthy relationships where everyone benefits from the positive and appreciative environment. If you find yourself surrounded by healthy relationships and good friends, you most likely had a lot to do with that, making you a better person than you think.
You fit your own description of a “good person”
How would you describe a “good person”? Do some of these traits reflect your personality? Describing a “good person” is very relative and most people will have different opinions about this. Basically, not fitting the description of “good person” given by someone else does not necessarily make you a bad person (Brainy Dose, 2021). According to Dr. Paul DePompo, psychologist and author based in California, suggested that rather than directly categorising your actions into “good” or “bad” might lead to inaccurate self-image e.g. you get too down when you do something “bad” and vice versa (Miller, 2019). Instead, it is suggested that you think of three to five characteristics of a good person and see if more than half of these fit your personality. That way, you’ll know that you are a relatively good person.
To conclude, this topic is very relative to what you think a “good person” should be and not relating to the signs that I have mentioned does not mean that you are not a good person. Everyone has different opinions about it, and no one can really say that you are wrong. However, if you are able to relate to any of the signs that I have addressed in this article, then chances are that you are a better person than you think and you should feel confident and proud of this.
