7 Signs Someone Is Trustworthy

Life is hard to handle on your own. Luckily, having people you can rely on makes things a little bit easier. Having people that you can count on to be there for you is essential in maintaining healthy relationships. However, it may be difficult to figure out what exactly makes someone trustworthy. To better understand these different areas, in this article, we’ll be discussing seven signs that a person is trustworthy. It is important to note that just because someone may not be the most trusting, that does not make them a bad person. You should gage in what areas a person is trustworthy or not before making decisions involving them.

1. They Show Consistency

A good way to judge a person’s trustworthiness is by asking a couple important questions: does the person change the way they act around others? Do they treat others differently than they do with you? While the answers to these questions will provide no definite answer, it can give you an idea about a person’s trustworthiness. Generally speaking, a trustworthy person will be the same person when you’re not around; they won’t hide behind a mask. When you talk with someone about this person, what they say should match up with your experience. You shouldn’t be surprised or shocked at what you hear about them (Todd 2017).

2. They Care About You

A trustworthy person is someone who cares about you. They don’t want to hurt or take advantage of you in order to gain something for their own interests. They respect your boundaries and don’t try to overstep their place. If you feel that your safety and beliefs aren’t respected, it can make it difficult to trust them (Todd 2017).

3. You Feel Relaxed Around Them

If you’re around a trustworthy person, you should feel that you can relax. You don’t feel that they’re trying to hide something from you or are trying to manipulate you into doing something. On your side, you feel like you don’t have to hide anything from them. You can be open and vulnerable without feeling that they’re looking to harm you. Generally speaking, they should appear to be relaxed around you as well. If the both of you feel mutually comfortable around one another, you can engage in an open conversation. However, if you feel tense around them, it may be a good idea to ask yourself why you feel that way (Todd 2017).

4. They Treat Others Well

When you discuss a certain person with others, it may be a good idea to listen to what they say about said person. If they show an inconsistency in their relationships, that may be a sign of a problem deep down. If you find that they’re mean to others, you should think about why that may be, and what makes them act differently around you (Todd 2017).

5. They’re Honest With You

An honest person is someone you feel that tells you how they truly feel. They have your best interest in mind and they tell the truth. When you ask for their opinion, they’re not mean and deconstructive to you. Rather they provide constructive criticism so that you can better yourself. A trustworthy person doesn’t need to lie to you or hide from you when you confront them (Thibodeaux 2018).

6. They Hold Themselves Accountable

Accountability is important. A trustworthy person can admit when they’re wrong. They don’t try to justify their wrongdoings or push the blame onto others. Rather, they accept responsibility for their actions and face the consequences that result from their decisions. They’re not only accountable around you, but others as well (Papa 2018).

7. They Follow Through With Their Actions

When a person is trustworthy, you can have faith that they will do what they say. When you make plans with someone, they won’t cancel for some mundane or made up reason. As no one can be 100% perfect, they will hold themselves accountable for any situation that they don’t follow through. Before you ask a favor of someone, it’d be a good idea to think about if they will actually follow through. If you think back to the past and notice that they’ve been inconsistent and make up excuses, it may be wise to ask somebody else (Papa 2018).

Having people you can trust is important in your relationships. Having people who are consistent, accountable, and caring in your life makes things just a little bit easier.
