8 Things You Should Never Say To Your Crush

Has someone special caught your eye lately? Is there a particular person you’ve been hoping to impress with your charm and wit?

Having a crush and falling in love with someone new can be one of the most exhilarating feelings in the world, and new love is always fun, innocent, and exciting. They make your heart skip a beat and send a million butterflies fluttering in your stomach with a simple smile or a wave hello.

But while you’re usually so funny, intelligent, and outgoing, all your usual eloquence disappears whenever they’re around. And suddenly you’re tongue-tied and floundering for something to say, terrified you’re going to embarrass yourself in front of them.

If you’ve been having trouble talking to your crush lately, don’t worry. We’ve all been there. And while the best advice anyone can give you is to just be yourself around them, there are certain things you should never say to your crush:

1. “I loved your outfit last Friday!

Yikes! That’s coming on a little strong, don’t you think? What might sound like a flattering compliment to you can very easily leave your crush bolting out the door. And yeah, admittedly, it’s normal to pay close attention to someone you like and notice all the little things about them – like the way they smile or the outfits they wear – but you risk coming across as creepy and obsessive if you let your crush know that you still remember the look they were sporting a week ago, especially if it was just a shirt and a pair of jeans.

2. “Oh yeah, I saw that on your social media.”

Even though you already know what your crush did over the summer (thanks to their Story) or what all their favorite songs and movies are (via their Twitter), there’s no need to let them know that. Don’t make it obvious that you’ve been stalking them online and browsing through all their social media profiles. Because while that’s something we all do from time to time, it’s not something you should readily own up to. You can say “Oh yeah, I saw that on your Facebook/Twitter/Instagram” if and only if it happened recently, so your crush doesn’t feel like you’re stalking them all the time.

3. “Why didn’t you reply to any of my texts?”

Ouch! Did your crush leave you on read, even though you already double (or triple) texted them? Have you been waiting since yesterday for a reply that never came? While that certainly stings, you shouldn’t make too much of a big deal about it. Maybe they were just busy or they didn’t quite know how to respond. You don’t need to pressure them into replying to you all the time. Otherwise, your crush might start thinking you’re clingy, needy, or bothersome.

4. “My family would love to meet you!”

Did you just invite your crush over to eat dinner at your house and meet your parents? Even though the two of you still barely know each other? If it’s still in the early stages of your relationship with your crush, there’s no need to introduce them to your family just yet, especially if you’re still unsure about them even liking you back. So next time your crush does something that makes you think “Oh, he’d get along so well with my parents”, it might be best to keep it to yourself.

5. “Do you still have feelings for your ex?”

This one just might be the biggest red flag of them all. Asking your crush about their ex is a definite no-no because it comes off as pushy, nosy, and jealous. And frankly speaking, it’s not really any of your business what happened between them and their ex or whether or not they’ve already moved on. It’s far too personal for you to ask your crush that, especially if you’re not even dating yet, and it will only make them defensive and uncomfortable.

6. “You’re so much better than my ex.”

It’s never a good idea to talk about your ex to your crush, and even worse to compare the two to each other. Your ex-boyfriend/girlfriend is no longer a part of the picture, so keep it that way. There’s no need to drag them down or constantly compare them to your new love interest. It’s petty, immature, and insensitive. And chances are, your crush won’t like it one bit. It shows that you’re still bitter about your past relationship and not entirely over your ex.

7. “Do you like me better than…?”

Are you jealous of your crush’s ex? Or maybe a close friend of theirs in the opposite gender? While it’s certainly okay to feel that way from time to time, you shouldn’t come right out and ask your crush if they like you better than this person. Constantly asking them things like, “Do you think I’m better looking than him/her?” or “Would you rather spend time with them than me?” is never acceptable, no matter how subtle or nonchalant you try to be. You’ll definitely scare your crush away by being so jealous and overly possessive.

8. “I don’t think you should be with…”

Finally, but perhaps most importantly, don’t ever tell your crush who they can and can’t spend time with. Even when you’re already on the cusp of being their new significant other, it’s still not your place to decide who they get to stay friends with or not. That choice is theirs and theirs alone. You have no right to demand them to be with you instead of someone else, and you shouldn’t try to keep them away from other important people in their life. Instead of having them all to yourself, you’ll only drive them away by being so controlling and asking too much of them.

Do you agree with our list? Have you ever thought about saying any of these 8 things to your crush? Well, we certainly hope you know better than that by now!

Having a crush on someone can be enchanting and beautiful, but it can also be difficult, embarrassing, and painfully awkward. Just be careful not to come off too pushy or too strong the first few times you talk to them, and you’ll be just fine! Stay true to yourself, get to know them better, and keep your fingers crossed for your budding new romance to blossom into something more.
