The 12 Most Common Defense Mechanisms

images

According to Freud, humans are driven by the need for homeostasis because of our hedonistic desires. We drive for consistency in our lives because we clamor for balance. And if we don’t we are not happy. Take a look at a stressed person, with his or her responsibilities all piled up all over the place. Stress doesn’t really play well with our happiness, and in order to deal with this we employ the use of these defense mechanisms. While unhealthy if used too frequently, these tend to overlap with each other and usually more than one defense mechanism is used in order for the person to cope. Still, the best way to cope about feelings is expressing them, maybe talking it out with someone or doing something with it. After all, having a  balanced life is one of the keys to happiness.
