Why Do We Care About Fictional Characters?

Who of us has never had a crush on a fictional character, or at least felt a connection with a character from a book or a movie? That is pretty common. Some girls cry their eyes out if a fictional character they like dies in the story, which also is a work of fiction. So why do we feel attached to worlds and characters that never did and never will exist?

There perhaps is a scientific explanation to the forth mentioned question. Some researches do look for answers and some of them concluded that it is just as simple as people’s nature to care about others, whether they are real or not. We also have it in us to be curious about what is going on in other people’s minds or lives. That is one of the reasons some people become hackers, just to satisfy their curiosity. When we read or watch a movie or a TV show, we are given access to all the aspects of a character’s life from what their background is to what they think about every situation they go through, also the actual situations they go through in plain details. And knowing all these details about a person in real life is very unreasonable; seriously, come on, you would be taking stalking to a whole new level.

We sympathize with characters because that is only normal to sympathize with people who have gone through something difficult. That is also why we dislike evil characters, because it is only normal for humans to dislike evilness. And through personal experience I can say that feeling for fictional characters helps us feel for people in real life, it also helps that we do not settle misjudgments on them. Beacsue we have an insight in so many characters’ lives that could be very similar to real life situations, and we have an idea that whatever people go through, it is not always as simple and easy as it may seem to be.

So now the next time you feel ashamed or odd over feeling for fictional characters, think back, it is not a wrong thing, but in the contrary it means that you are a sensual person.
