8 Body Languages That Can Increase Attention

8 Ways Your Body Language Can Increase Attraction

What is body language? According to the dictionary, body language is defined as a type of nonverbal communication where physical movements, conscious or unconscious, are used to express attitudes and feelings. These physical movements can range from facial expression to body posture. In this article, I will be going through some of the ways our body language can help to promote attraction.

1. Smile

Turn that frown, upside down. Smiling can be a great way to promote attraction because it makes a person appear friendlier and more approachable. It doesn’t have to be a huge smile, a simple one would suffice. People also generally prefer to see happy faces as it brings about a pleasant feeling (Health Line 2020).

2. Open Up

What this means is to avoid crossing your arms or legs. Opening yourself up helps to make you appear relaxed while crossing your arms often relates to closed body language which can make you look defensive and less approachable (Notas 2020). Wouldn’t you want to appear more approachable?

3. Mirroring

Research has shown that when an individual is attracted to another, he/she tends to mimic their body language as a response to show interest in them. If you are out on a date, mirroring can help you to convey a subtle message that you are interested in him/her. Mirroring also helps to connect the two parties as it can create a feeling of being similar to each other which provides familiarity (Minds Journal 2020).

4. Eye Contact

Just a heads up, this does not mean you engage in a staring contest. This actually means to maintain good eye contact. Being able to do so demonstrates that you are genuinely interested in what the other person has to say and it shows that you are listening. Taking a softer approach to eye contact can help you to convey friendliness as compared to giving a hard stare (Wong 2020).

5. Occupying More Space

Depending on the situation, taking up more but also an appropriate amount of space, can be beneficial. Whether you are standing up or sitting down, it gives people the impression that you are comfortable and relaxed (Notas 2020). It can also make you appear more confident. Although confidence is an attractive quality to have which can help promote attraction, we must also be considerate when taking up space.

6. Keeping Calm

What exactly is meant by keeping calm? This mainly refers to not doing certain things such as nail-biting, unnecessary face touching and generally fidgeting during interactions. It can tell them that you are nervous or anxious which may make them feel uncomfortable interacting with you. This can also communicate other messages such as you are not really keen on interacting and would rather be somewhere else (Sheffield 2020).

7. Having Proper Posture

Aside from health reasons, practicing to have proper posture is an important aspect of body language. It can give the impression of a confident person and it also makes us look taller. On the other hand, slouching may make a person look unenergetic and may indicate low self-esteem. It is also unhealthy in the long run. Whether it is walking, sitting down or standing up, having a good posture is beneficial in overall.

8. Express with Your Hands

Why use our hands when our mouths are talking? That’s because hand gestures help to show others that you are enthusiastic in what you are trying to communicate. It also helps to emphasize certain points in the conversation. It makes you appear more comfortable when you are speaking as well.

How many of these methods do you agree with? Although these are only some of the methods, there are probably a lot more different variety of body language techniques out there. Our body language is an important tool that we usually do not realize the different messages we might be conveying. Being aware of our behaviours can help us to improve our nonverbal communication. If you are looking to improve your body language, perhaps you can start with some of these?
