Only Introverts Will Understand These 9 Problems

Being an introvert isn’t a secondary trait of one’s personality, as opposed to common perception. Being predominantly interested in one’s mental self isn’t a bad thing. It allows you to understand yourself better and experience things in a different way. Not to mention how much fun many solitary activities, such as jogging or hiking, are. Introversion does, however, bring problems to the carrier at certain occasions. Here are 9 problems only introverts understand.

1. Your introversion being mistaken for shyness.

A common mistake amongst non-introverts. A preference of solitary activities over group ones doesn’t necessarily mean that you fear social interaction. Introversion and shyness are sometimes interconnected, but they shouldn’t be confused.

2. Rapid changes.

Us introverts are very fond of understanding details and observing things, people and situations. Therefore fast alterations cause discomfort and are a great inconvenience, as it provides us with no time to assess things.

3. Break from socialising.

What people don’t seem to understand about introverts is that we actually enjoy being alone and need time off of social events. Sometimes, we need a break from too much socialising and prepare ourselves before we engage in social activities again. Socialising IS exhausting.

4. Phone calls.

No, I’m not picking it up. I’m not mentally prepared to talk. Please stop calling me. Oh phew, they’ve hung up. I’ll text them to apologise for an hour or so.

5. Too. Many. People.

Let’s face it; We function better as part of a small group of people we are familiar with rather than with a big group of people. So, on your next group assignment, be quick and ask the three people you’re comfortable with to work with you.

6. Parties.

We might try to be more social from time to time. Our friend gives us a ride to that party we’re invited to. We regret our decision to go shortly afterwards. Sadly, our friend prefers to stay late and none’s willing to give us a ride home. Can you feel the distress?

7. Pressure to be more social.

It happens so often, it’s getting annoying. Might be a friend or a family member, the pressure to go somewhere or do something is always there, whether you like it or not.

8. The “book-shield“

Public reading is usually the number one way to avoid human contact. Unfortunately, many people see you carrying a book as a conversation starter, which, obviously, wasn’t exactly what you were aiming for.

9. “Why are you so quiet?”

Your silence being associated with you being mean, snobby or antisocial. This is only causing you extra stress when you have to attend a social event, though. There is no way to politely explain to someone that you’re busy day-dreaming or too caught up in your inner monologue, that you haven’t been paying the slightest attention to whatever they were saying. Are you interested in reading more about introversion?
