Germany Goodies: A Food Journal
The only reason I use instagram: food. Here are some of the specialty dishes that were exceptional!
My dad was in a rush and grabbed two random drinks from the machine. One was what we thought was regular water that turned out to be sparkling water. The other colorful can was orange coke. I mostly tasted the coke but then got some orange Fanta-like flavor.
At the Hofbräuhaus I tried beer that was too bitter by itself but it was very good paired with the pork belly I ordered with gravy, Bavarian kaut (sauerkraut) and potato dumpling. The gravy was really good and the dumpling was like mocchi and super squishy.
This is an ice cream called a Smartie tüte (tu-tay). It was vanilla and strawberry ice cream with whipped cream topped with a pirouette stick (chocolate laced wafer), a lot of chocolate drizzle, and smarties candy in a waffle cone. Smarties are not the sweet little circles from the States. They have a colorful shell but are filled with chocolate. The strawberry ice cream was the freshest strawberry flavor I have ever had from ice cream.
I quickly ate a blueberry muffin with a chai ice frappe from McDonald’s. (This was probably one of the cleanest ones I’ve ever been too.) The ice frappe didn’t have a lot of chai flavor but the muffin was good.
For lunch we had sausage and sauerkraut then kässpatzen (käse means cheese). The first dish was like breakfast sausage and the other dish was really spongy mac and cheese.
For dessert there was apple strudel. The apples inside were super sweet that went well with the ice cream. I had apple strudel once in the States but this one was way better and it didn’t have cinnamon in it.
In a bike tour lunch break we had the biggest meal ever! We ordered ribs, white wiener, more potatoes, another potato dumpling, and better kässpatzen. This time the dumpling came with a dark beer sauce that made it even more delicious. The kässpatzen was cheesier and the ribs came right off the bone.
At Schuhbecks Eissalon we enjoyed random flavors that looked good and tasted good. None of it was in English and we just pointed.
In our little trip to Austria we then had a giant pizza pretzel. It was basically cheesy bread. We had another white wiener with mustard, which was a little overcooked but I’m being picky for a street vendor. It was still good. I tried this drink that I thought was Apple juice but it was more like sparkling cider they give to kids during new years.
My dad couldn’t leave without buying the Austrian Specialty chocolate with Mozart’s face on it. The outside is a dark chocolate and then there is a marzipan layer then a nougat center!
For brunch one day we ordered the original schnitzel and pork. We also tried their freshly made lemonade. It was made with fresh ginger, lime juice, cane sugar, forest honey, and soda. The pork was very good and tender but I’m not very fond of schnitzel. It was battered pork with French fries.
More to come!
