The Height of a Woman’s Shoe Heel Affects a Man’s Willingness to Help

Get this: a woman is standing in front of your local grocery store asking every male stranger to complete a survey for her. At first, she’s wearing ballet flats, then she switches to a medium sized heel and, lastly, into much higher heels.

Did the differing shoe styles affect whether or not the men agreed to fill out the questionnaire for her?

High heels are horrible for your joints and wearing them with a relaxed attitude is nearly impossible (unless your face wants a meeting with the ground)…but they’re magical sex appeal items.

“Women’s shoe heel size exerts a powerful effect on men’s behavior”, researcher Nicolas Gueguen from Universite de Bretagne-Sud in France explains. Gueguen conducted a field experiment to test the influence of different shoe styles on men’s helping behavior.

Brunette French women in identical black and white business suits were utilized in three experiments:

1st experiment details: 30 male strangers were approached and asked to complete a survey.

  • 46.7% agreed when she was wearing black flats
  • 63.3% agreed when she was wearing black flats with a 2 inch heel
  • 83.3% agreed when she was wearing black pumps with a 3.5 inch heel

That’s a huge difference with an almost 20% increase as the height of the heel progressed!

2nd experiment details: Gueguen had 4 ladies approach both men and women and asked them to complete the questionnaire.

82% of men dived into helping the women in heels but only 33% of women on average said yes to the survey request, despite the heel height.

3rd Experiment details: Gueguen asked women to walk in front of a male suspect and “accidentally” drop a glove.

93% of these men chased after the women when they wore high heels to return the glove

62% of men did when she wore flat shoes

48% of woman chased after the women to return the glove, despite the heel size

Last experiment details: Gueguen had women sit at 3 different bars completely by herself, with flats then with heels.

Men were twice as fast to approach her when she was wearing heels (and she was sitting down, not standing or playing catwalk!).businesswoman

What are your thoughts on these findings?

Do you feel a lot more men approach you when you wear heels?

Men: do you prefer women to wear heels or do you think it’s a little too much.

Chrissy
