10 Ways You Can Tell Someone Likes You Over TEXT

Hey, Psych2Goers! Thanks for joining us for another article. Quick question: Are you reading this on your phone? Chances are you are. Our phones have become an integral part of our lives. Texting has become our go to way of communication. It’s quick, to the point, and (my favorite) you can reply when you’re able to. Since texting has become so common, it’s also become a staple on the dating scene. When you’re reading something, it’s open to interpretation of meaning and tone. This makes dating a little difficult. Hopefully, we can make (dating) life a bit easier. Here’s 10 ways you can tell someone likes you over a text.

Side note: This video is for entertainment and general guidance purposes. We advise you to always listen to your intuition and always do what is right for you.

#1: They mirror how you text.

I don’t know about you, but my biggest texting pet peeve is uneven texting. I typically text shorter texts, two to three lines maximum. If someone starts bombarding me with a novel, I’m immediately turned off. If you text once, so do they. If you text rapid fire, so do they. Similarity in texting style has a positive correlation to relationship satisfaction (Ohadi, Brown, Trub, & Rosenthal, 2018). You might be able to use this as an indicator they like you.

#2: They don’t text one-word answers.

Nothing kills a conversation more than “yep” or “cool” or the ever dreaded “K.” If someone is using these, they’re possibly trying to end the conversation. If you’re texting someone who likes you, they will be sending anything but a one-word reply. They’ll ask questions, tell you about themselves, and maybe throw in a voice text or two.

#3: They use flirty emojis.

Emojis are not a one-size fits all type deal. What do I mean? I mean, you’re probably not going to send your boss a winky tongue out emoji when asking what time your next shift begins. If you’re receiving emojis with hearts, winks, or even kisses, this could be a sign that the person texting you likes you!

#4: They reply quickly.

Let’s be honest. I don’t think any of us are more than 2 feet away from our phones at all times. If you get a notification, you know it. Of course, there are situations where they may not look or be able to answer, but for the most part, if they’re waiting for you to text, they’ll know the second it comes in. They might wait a bit to play it cool, but it’s never too long before your phone’s a-buzzin’!

#5: They initiate conversation.

It’s always a red flag if one party or the other is initiating conversations 100% of the time. Both sides need to be invested and interested in each other, as well as show the same effort. If this person initiates conversation or even sends the “This reminded me of you” + picture, it could be a sign they like you.

#6: It’s a 24/7 text cycle.

You two text all the time! There are even “good morning” and “good night” texts being said (or not because you fell asleep before replying). When there’s someone that you like enough to talk to all day every day, that’s kinda special. It could be something more than friends.

#7: They pepper in “we” and “us” language.

You and your crush are texting, and you’re talking about your favorite foods. You find out your crush loves ice cream and knows of a really great spot. They say “WE have to go there some time.” This shows a greater sense of being a part of a couple without being too strong.

#8: They let you know when they’re unavailable.

Like we’ve been saying, we’re attached at the hip to our phones. If someone doesn’t answer for a few hours, ESPECIALLY your crush, your mind starts to wonder. When your crush preempts that issue and lets you know they’ll be unavailable PLUS when they will be available again, that’s showing some major consideration. This person might like you.

#9: They use nicknames with you or have even given you one.

Nicknames are adorable, imo. Sure, your crush can call you your common nickname, but when they move into pet name territory (as long as it’s consensual) that’s where we might have some liking. Things like calling you “hun”, “sweetie”, “babe”, or even giving you a nick name are sure differentiators from just friends.

#10: Texts turn into phone calls.

I will text anyone and everyone all day long. I will only call you if I absolutely need to, and it will be 10 minutes tops. No exceptions… unless you’re my fiancé. When your crush is texting you back and forth, and you’ve been at it for a while, sometimes, it’s easier to just dial. If they call you, this is a sign they like you. (Bonus points if you stay on the phone past midnight. Lightning round if anyone falls asleep on the phone.)
