Be Attentive

It is always a positive if your date feels like they are being listened to and that you are taking an interest in what they are saying. Sometimes we feel that if we play it cool, that will entice our potential partner however that may backfire and come across like you are bored or disinterested. Ignore that impulse and give them the space to speak their mind (McArthur, 2019) but also try and add to the conversation as well.

Pick an interesting date, venue or activity

Think of something unusual; rather than suggesting going to the cinema (where you get little opportunity to talk and get to know them) or going to the local pub, suggest doing an activity you’ve always wanted to do or ask them if there is something that they have always wanted to do. Consider taking your date to a museum, a sporting event or an interesting restaurant for an activity that will foster conversation and allow you to have active interactions (Menyes, 2017)

Don’t interview your date

It’s important to show interest in your crush and ask questions but be mindful of it coming across like an interview! Think about the questions you ask and what information you would like to know. Remember to listen to what they have to say and respond accordingly.

Don’t be clingy

It’s understandable that you will probably want to spend a lot of time with your crush in an attempt to get to know them, however you should try to avoid overwhelming them by trying to be with them constantly (McArthur, 2019). As they say, absence makes the heart grow fonder!

Be Memorable

This one may sound like an obvious one, but making a last impression is what will make you stand out from the crowd! Be open to sharing some facts about yourself; your hobbies, interests, your work. The more somebody may know about you, the more they will be able to determine if you have any common ground. Don’t lie about yourself though – just be yourself!

Smell Great

Our brains work in mysterious ways, so sometimes scents can create really powerful connections with our memories (McArthur, 2019). If we smell appealing to somebody, then chances are they are likely to start associating that smell with your presence and even when you are not around.

Be assertive

You need to be able to catch their attention and the first way to do that is to talk and engage with them so try and seek organic opportunities to strike up conversation where possible. As much as you might want to keep your feelings under wraps, acting too shy and bashful around them will create a situation where there are few opportunities for you to shine (McArthur, 2019). By making the first move, this may cause them to take notice of you.

Use eye contact and body language

Want to make a lasting impression? One of the best ways to connect with your crush is to make good eye contact with them and use relaxed and open body language. Making eye contact shows that you are attentive and engaged.
