Diary of an Introvert with Cabin Fever: 4/12/2017

I absolutely love when I have my creative moments. It means that my mind is still firing on all cylinders.

Today was much easier than I was expecting it to be. One of my classes got canceled earlier this week. Another got canceled this afternoon… I didn’t know this until I got back to school, but hey. I got in some exercise, so I can’t complain.

To be perfectly frank, last week was very difficult for me. You probably read my last entry on the 4th. The week only got worse from there. I needed a major reprieve to heal.

Today, I realized that I heal myself through creativity. You may remember that I am a fan of Face Off and Cosplay Melee on the Syfy channel.

I have come to learn that watching other people be creative feeds my own creativity. It wasn’t always that way – I used to compare myself to other artists so badly that I actually gave up art for a long time because I thought I wasn’t good enough. Since I have stopped comparing myself to others, I enjoy artistic shows like these so much more. I even take part in the challenges along with the contestants.

Not so much with Face Off because I’ve only had one make-up class, and it was stage make-up. I have no experience with movie make-up or prosthetic.

Cosplay Melee is a different story. I don’t have much experience with sewing. Any cosplays that I have put together have come from stuff already in my closet. I do some alterations, but not massive sewing projects. These costumes are never going to win contests, but that’s not why I cosplay. I cosplay to have fun.

My huge pension comes with creating original characters. As a writer, I do this anyways. I’ve been doing this since I was eleven. So when the challenges are presented, I design along with the contestants.

Today, something similar happened. I have that one nerd friend, R, who I can squee with on pretty much anything nerd related. Today, we got on the subject of Japanese styled dating sims. We got so excited about the subject that we start talking about creating our own.

I know that there are those art purists out there, and I know what they’re saying. “Make-up is not art. Cosplay is not art. Video Games are not art – especially dating sims”. To these people, I say, “You’re wrong”. Art is in the eye of the beholder, and for me, art is anything that excites and heals me. I feel excited and healed by all of these things. So for me, they are art.

It doesn’t matter the form. Art is art. It is exciting. It is healing.

Dear Diary: art is art. art is excited. art is healing.
