The 12 Disturbing Sleep Disorders
11. Kleine-Levin Syndrome
Have you ever gotten the feeling of being so tired, that you just want to sleep for a long time? Well, it’s quite normal to feel refreshed after a really good 8-hour date with your bed. But people who are affected by this syndrome are fit to rival sleeping beauty herself! Nicknamed as ‘the sleeping beauty syndrome’, this disorder is characterized by a person sleeping up to 23 hours a day for three weeks in a row (Phillips, 2014). It affects young males around the age of 15, with symptoms prevailing for around 8 years (longer for women) (Phillips, 2014). During the episodes of the disorder, sufferers sleep nearly entire days away for several weeks at a time (Phillips, 2014). During periods of sleep, it is very difficult to wake them up (Phillips, 2014). And when they do wake, they often exhibit unusual and excessive behaviors such as binge eating, compulsive behaviors, heightened sex drive, confusion, apathy, hallucinations, and sometimes childlike behaviors (Phillips, 2014).
